Prof. Shin-ichiro Kawazu DVM PhD

Prof. Shin-ichiro Kawazu is currently working on malaria, Babesia and schistosomiasis together with his research group Advanced Preventive Medicine here at the National Center for Protozoan Diseases, Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine. The main goal of his Plasmodium and Babesia researches is to understand the basic cellular mechanisms of these apicomplexan parasites. The current focus of which is on the development and application of genetically modified parasite for investigation of host-parasite relationship in these parasites. On the other hand, his schistosomiasis research is involved in the development of reliable serodiagnostic tools appropriate for field applications both for humans and animals. In the past, he also did research studies on Leishmania and Theilleria parasites. His researches have been funded by various grants from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science, Sports, Culture and Technology; Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan; Japan Society for the Promotion of Science; and Japan Science and Technology Agency. He has already published more than a hundred original research papers in peer-reviewed journals. Recently, he has received the highest honor for parasitologists in Japan, the 2013 Koizumi Prize from the Japanese Society of Parasitology.
